The ridiculous plot of rival gangs, lizard people in the woods, and a post-apocalyptic plague felt very Final Warning-MAX-FANG era of the original Maximum Ride books, which is to say it wasn't very original or compelling character wise, but more of an action packed sideshow attraction of strange events that only make sense because the entire basis of this series is, 'yeah, these kids are mutants, roll with it'. Well it was better than whatever Hawk was trying to do.
